Experience A Jane Austen Weekend – Visiting Netherfield

Was it a dream or did it really happen? I have this beautiful memory of arriving at a stately house and being shown to a large room with a comfy-looking wing chair next to the fireplace that looked perfect for getting lost in one of my favorite books. Looking out across a lawn surrounded by gardens and mountains beyond, I could see ladies and gentlemen playing croquet below. I say ladies and gentlemen because I saw long dresses and parasols and top hats, but as yet I had not been introduced.

That was properly remedied when we gathered to greet a horse-drawn carriage just returning from a drive around the village. They were none other than Mr. Collins, Anne Elliot, Lady Catherine, Fanny Dashwood, and Mr. Bingley. How odd that characters from different books should turn up together.

But now I remember, it wasn’t a dream. It was a Jane Austen weekend in character when the Governor’s House in Hyde Park, Vermont, becomes Netherfield Park and any of Austen’s characters are invited to stay and even talk with each other, though it was almost too exciting when Lady Catherine told Fanny Dashwood that her behavior toward her sisters-in-law was the outside of enough!

Meanwhile, we learned to cut a quill pen properly and some of us made turbans in the afternoon and wore them to the Regency dinner party with English country dancing. I hope there will be another such weekend soon. I won’t have to dream: I can return to Netherfield.
