Fall Foliage Viewing: New England Fall Vacations
Autumn Vacations in the Northeast USA
Fall is the most popular time of the year to visit New England. The fall foliage display is the reason and nature’s annual color show never ceases to disappoint.
The New England fall foliage season begins in the north country of Maine in late August and extends to northern New Hampshire and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont by early September. Fall Foliage extends until late October in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island – the southern New England states.
While many Fall Foliage viewing visitors to New England take an extended weekend, it is much nicer to really relax and plan for a week or month-long adventure.
Plan to begin your New England Fall Foliage vacation by visiting your northernmost destination first, then traveling south to the end of your trip. To truly customize your lodging and attraction stops the use of a vehicle is vital. Most of Northern New England offers little or no mass transit options. Drive your own car or truck or rent a car after arriving at your New England airport of choice. Don’t try to take a “last-minute” getaway and expect to find reservations at most of our better inns, hotels, or resorts – many are booked in advance especially during this busy time of the year.
Explore the back roads and countryside but use caution when relying solely upon your automobile’s navigation system. Check with your innkeeper or hotel concierge to inquire about scenic roads and fall foliage viewing areas nearby.
Enjoy the ride. Slow down and breathe deep, and smile. Fall is amazing here. Snow season is next and life is good for those of us fortunate to be living in New England.
